The Comical Hat only loved In Bruges starring Misters Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as two hapless hitmen on the run  — or in hiding — despite Ralph Fiennes best efforts to ruin it with a dodgy cockney accent towards the end. We especially like the bit where the two lads are sitting in the hotel room and Glesson says we have to wait here for the phone to ring and Farrell says “What if it doesn’t ring?” That my friends is the kind of dramatic irony that is like sooooo Beckettesque.

Anyway, I’m telling you because our friends at Hanoi Grapevine say that their friends at the Cinematheque are showing In Bruges tomorrow night. You should go. Bring a friend. Laugh out loud funny so it is. Here’s a teasing clip.

  1. I think the word is “Beckettian”

  2. Thanks Mick — Beckett would be turning in his six foot something long grave if he saw others described as Beckettesque. Of course he would if he could prefer to be reading about himself in French so “Tres Beckett is probably the way to go.

  3. 3 jon south

we like the quote,”Purgatory, it’s when you’re not awful, not really bad, but you’re not really good either – a bit like Tottenham…”

Of course, like The Minsk Club, THIS is going to be Tottenhams season.

  4. Now, really, lety’s not compare Spurs to Minsk Club FC. “Our aspirations are intact,” said the gaffer Johnny Cinnamons, one month before the first game of the season (which is young yet).

Spurs are however floundering and just look plain bad I’m afraid.
